Dover Castle guards the port on the hill next to the White Cliffs: a medieval fortress with wartime tunnels below. Leeds Castle stands in Kent's countryside: a moated castle in parkland with gardens and a maze.
The Anderson tour includes Dover Castle; Evan Evans and Golden Tours include Leeds Castle. The English Bus stops at Dover Castle but you pay on the day.
The quick answer
Pick Dover Castle for military history and the wartime tunnels, with the cliffs next door: the Anderson tour includes about two hours inside. Pick Leeds Castle for a romantic moated castle, gardens and the maze: Evan Evans includes about 1.5 hours. Either way, expect only 20 to 45 minutes at the cliffs.

What is the difference between the two castles?
Dover Castle is a hilltop fortress with tunnels used in the Second World War; Leeds Castle is a moated castle in parkland, furnished as a historic residence.
| Dover Castle | Leeds Castle | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Above Dover port, by the cliffs | Kent countryside |
| Highlights | Great Tower, wartime tunnels | Moat, furnished rooms, gardens, maze |
| Tour with entry | Anderson ($148) | Evan Evans ($141) |
| Time inside | About 2 hours | About 1.5 hours |
| Time at the cliffs | About 45 minutes | About 20 minutes |
Why choose Dover Castle?
For military history: the castle has guarded the Channel crossing for centuries, and its tunnels were used in the Second World War.
English Heritage says the Operation Dynamo section of the Secret Wartime Tunnels is closed for maintenance (checked 7 October 2026). The Underground Hospital is open, but not by wheelchair. One guest on the Anderson tour also found the war tunnels closed for refurbishment. Expect steep paths and steps.

Dover Castle entry included, plus the cliffs and Canterbury Cathedral.

For a picture-book castle: a 12th-century castle ringed by a moat, with furnished rooms, gardens and a yew-hedge maze.
The stone castle was begun around 1119 on islands in the moat, and the maze opened in 1988, says the Kent heritage register. The Evan Evans tour includes entry and about 1.5 hours there, before Canterbury and the White Cliffs. Golden Tours offers early entry and adds Greenwich and a Thames boat (April to October).

Leeds Castle entry included, with Canterbury and the White Cliffs on the same day.
Explore Leeds Castle, Canterbury and DoverHow much cliff time do you lose?
Plenty: the castle tours stop at the White Cliffs for about 20 to 45 minutes, against about two hours on the cliffs-first day trip.
That is enough for a viewpoint and photos, not for a walk along the path. If the cliffs matter most, read the cliff walk guide first.
What does each castle cost if you pay yourself?
Dover Castle gate prices are about £27 to £30 per adult in 2026, depending on the season; on The English Bus you pay this on the day.
On the Anderson and Evan Evans tours, entry is already in the price, which makes their higher tour prices easier to compare with the cheapest trips.
Which castle suits families?
Leeds Castle's grounds and maze work well for children; Dover Castle suits older kids who like soldiers, tunnels and battlements.
Both involve a lot of walking. See Dover and Canterbury with kids for age limits on each tour.

Is there a tour with both castles?
Not among the tours listed here; each picks one castle, because both together leave no time for Canterbury and the cliffs.
Want both? Give them two separate days, or take a private tour that sets its own pace.
