London to Dover and Canterbury: train or tour?

High-speed trains put Canterbury less than an hour from London. Why take a coach tour at all? For a day at the White Cliffs and Canterbury, sometimes you should not.

Southeastern high-speed trains run from London St Pancras to Canterbury West in about 54 minutes, and to Dover Priory in just over an hour. On paper, doing it yourself beats a coach.

In practice, the White Cliffs are a walk or a taxi from Dover's station, and linking both places in one day needs planning. A tour trades flexibility for simplicity.

The quick answer

By train, Canterbury is about an hour from St Pancras, but the White Cliffs visitor centre is about two miles (a 40-minute walk) from Dover Priory station. A tour costs from about $101, includes the transfers and a guide, and gets you to the cliff top with no extra legwork.

How long does the train take from London?

High-speed trains from St Pancras reach Canterbury West in about 54 minutes (50 at the fastest) and Dover Priory in about 67 minutes.

Southeastern lists about 28 direct trains a day to Canterbury West and about 42 to Dover Priory. An Anytime Day Single starts at £42.10 to Canterbury West and £48.60 to Dover Priory. Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets cost less, and a Railcard takes about a third off most fares.

How do you get from Dover station to the White Cliffs?

On foot it is about two miles, roughly 40 minutes, from Dover Priory to the National Trust visitor centre, following the brown signs; a taxi is quicker.

The route goes through the town and along the seafront before climbing to the cliff top. Then you still have the cliff walk itself, so allow most of a morning or afternoon for Dover.

How do train and tour compare?

The train wins on speed and freedom; the tour wins on simplicity, a guide and getting straight to the cliff top.

When is the train the better choice?

When you want a long day in one place, a full cliff walk to the lighthouse, or to stay overnight in Canterbury.

Happy to plan connections? You get more time at each stop, and Dover Castle or the Fan Bay Deep Shelter at your own pace.

When is a tour the better choice?

When you want both places in one day with no planning, a guide's stories on the way, and a set return time.

Tours also add stops that are awkward by train: Deal on the Go Tours UK day, Chilham village with The English Bus, or Leeds Castle on the Evan Evans and Golden Tours days.

Can you combine a tour with the train?

Not on these tours: each one returns to its London meeting point, and you cannot leave the group to stay on.
