The National Trust looks after the cliffs east of Dover's port. From the visitor centre, a grassy path runs along the cliff top towards South Foreland Lighthouse, with the harbour and the English Channel below.
The catch: you walk on top of the cliffs. To see the famous white face, you need time to walk along the path, which is why the length of the cliff stop matters more than anything else on these tours.
The quick answer
From the cliff top you look along the cliffs rather than at them; the white face comes into view as you walk further along the path. Allow at least an hour, ideally two. The Day Tours London trip gives about two hours and Go Tours UK about 1.5; castle combos stop for 20 to 45 minutes.

Where is the White Cliffs walk?
The walk starts at the National Trust visitor centre on the cliffs east of Dover's port and follows the cliff top towards South Foreland Lighthouse, about two miles away.
Entry is free. The visitor centre has a cafe and shop (10 AM to 5 PM) and toilets, and the National Trust runs an accessible path from here to one viewing point over the cliffs. Everything beyond that is on foot.

Why can't you see the white cliffs from the top?
Because you are standing on them: from the first viewpoints you see the harbour and the line of the cliffs edge-on.
Several guests wrote that they expected the classic postcard view and only saw the cliffs from above. Walk further along the path and the curving white face opens up behind you. The full postcard shot needs the beach or a boat.

At least an hour to walk out and back to a good viewpoint; two hours to go further towards the lighthouse without rushing.

| Go Tours UK | About 1.5 hours | $101 |

Can you see France from the White Cliffs?
On a clear day, yes: the French coast is visible across the Strait of Dover, the narrowest part of the Channel.
The National Trust says so, and several reviewers were delighted to spot it. Haze and sea mist often hide it, so treat it as a bonus.

How hard is the walk?
Easy to moderate: the path is grass and chalk, mostly gentle but uneven, exposed to the wind and slippery after rain.
Past the accessible path to the first viewing point, it is no place for a wheelchair. Nervous of heights? Keep to the inland side. One guest wrote that the cliffs needed more walking than expected and were very windy, so go slowly if your mobility is limited.
What should you wear for the cliffs?
Shoes with grip, a windproof jacket and layers, whatever the season.
The cliff top is open to the weather, and guests mention the wind again and again. A hat and sunscreen help in summer, a waterproof the rest of the year. Bring water: the National Trust lists one cafe, at the visitor centre, and nothing along the path.

Prefer a small group? Go Tours UK gives about 1.5 hours at the cliffs, with up to 16 guests.

South Foreland Lighthouse at the end of the path, and the Fan Bay Deep Shelter, wartime tunnels built in 1940 and 1941 and shown on a separate hard-hat tour (£15 adults, £7 ages 5 to 17).
Neither fits into a day trip from London. Both are good reasons to come back by train and spend longer in Dover. Dover Castle stands on the hill on the other side of the port.
Arriving by cruise ship in Dover?
A shore excursion from the cruise terminal is the easier option: the Cliffs & Country tour visits the coast at Dover and St Margaret's Bay before Canterbury.
It is a 7-hour day with a Blue Badge guide and a maximum of 14 guests, rated 4.7 from 17 reviews.

Is the White Cliffs walk free?
Yes. The National Trust charges only for parking, which matters if you drive, not on a tour.
How far is South Foreland Lighthouse?
About two miles along the cliff path from the visitor centre car park.
Can you walk down to the beach?
Not on a day trip: the National Trust describes cliff-top walks, and the white face is best seen from the sea or a beach. There is rarely time for detours.
Are the White Cliffs good in bad weather?
The views shrink in mist and the path gets slippery in rain, but the cliffs are still impressive. Canterbury makes a good second half in any weather.
